It’s 1971… and It’s a busy year for Traffic. So much is going on, that we’ve created several pages for all the stories behind the releases of Welcome to The Canteen in September 1971 – six pages – and then eight pages of anecdotes and details about The Low Spark of The High Heeled Boys release in November1971.
But to give you a real idea of what their lives were like, we have constructed a 1971 diary of what the boys were up to … clearly no time for sleep. Ten pages of details – gigs, events, concerts and recording sessions … and then there’s Glastonbury Fayre when Traffic headline the Pyramid Stage – constructed on the Glastonbury/Stonehenge ley line. In our pages about Low Spark, the estate of photographer Dick Polak, kindly allowed us to reproduce shots from the studio sessions. You can feel the electricity between them all. In an interview with Chris Blackwell in 2026, he told us…
“Low Spark was an extraordinary piece of music they got lost in… so did the audience. Your could see it. Steve completely lost in the piano parts. Chris Wood and that… interplay with the sax… their playing was almost telepathic at times.”
