If only we could win the lottery, we’d bring you a pretty fine sampler album of some of the amazing music that Island Records produced in 1969-70. But modern technology brings us the joy of YouTube and we’ve been able to create a playlist for you listing some of Neil’s favourite tracks from Volume 2. Here’s the first ten… there more to come…
1. Free – The Hunter from Tons of Sobs
Not for the faint hearted, we’ve put the live version up for your pleasure. A heartstarter from the beginning for sure. Warning… you can’t stop listening to this one once its started
2. Traffic – Glad from John Barleycorn Must Die
For this track we’ve found the video form Santa Monica. Listen to this one if only for Chris Wood amazing inventiveness
3. Fairport Convention – The Lark In The Morning (jigs and reels) from Liege & Lief
4. Fairport Convention – Sloth from Full House – with an enhanced video from a performance in Paris
5. Nick Drake – River Man from Five Leaves Left – not much you can say about this, except brilliant and compelling
6. Traffic – Blind Man (live) from Last Exit
7. Spooky Tooth – I Am The Walrus from The Last Puff – a lot of people might not like bands doing cover versions of Beatles songs, but this is worth listening to hear Mike Harrsion belting it out at 98 decibels if nothing else. The video is live TV performance from 1974, a bit later than the book, but still unforgettable
8. King Crimson – The Wake of Poseidon from In The Wake of Poseidon
In the book, the singles or 45’s are listed as well and these two appear
9. Heavy Jelly – I Keep Singing That Same Old Song (45 only)
10. Jethro Tull – Living In The Past (45)
You can watch the individual videos to the right but we also have a playlist on the HiddenMasters website, so you can just set it going and just lie back and think of England
