We’ve just had our first review – and the third volume of Island Records isn’t even out yet!!!!!! Those very nice people at FREAKOUT BOOKSHELF got an advanced copy – our publishers Manchester University Press send out advance copies to our booksellers who sell books the old fashion way – in shops. This particular bookseller is dedicated to music books – “Discover books that delve into the heart of music, the biography of an artist, evolution of a genre, or an exploration of music’s impact on society…”

There are some books that just feel like an event, and this is absolutely one of them.
An advanced copy of The Island Book of Records Volume III: 1971-72 by Neil Storey just landed on my doorstep, courtesy of @manchester_university_press and it’s every bit as monumental as the music it documents.
It’s an absolute beast of a book, packed with everything you could want from the legendary Island Records during two wild years.
The scope is mind-blowing: 80 albums covered, from Nick Drake, Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens, ELP, Sandy Denny and Mott The Hoople. And for the true collectors out there, it even dives into the albums that never saw the light of day, think Junkyard Angel and Jess Roden’s lost solo record. Pure nerd heaven.
The official release date is October 6, so you don’t have long to wait. Trust me, you’re going to want this one on your shelf.

IF you are wondering about the image they used from the book… its a picture of Mott The Hoople that was taken by photographer Brian Cooke for the release of the album “Wildlife” … but never used.
In this edition we have been graced by the magnificent photographers of the time allowing us to feature many wonderful unpublished photographs … and Brian is one of those greats. There are many more images of his that have surprised us which you can see in this volume.
